"Efforts to destroy the Hindu matham brought about Nature's sting [in the form of] tidal waves," said the Mathaadipathi of Saarada Peetham in Vishakapattinam.
Vishakapattinam Saarada Peetham Jagadguru Sankaracharya Swaroopanandendra Saraswati Swamigal gave an interview to journalists in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. He said:
"Certain political leaders slandered, defamed and imprisoned Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal, [in doing so] tried to destroy Hindu traditions. If one tries to destroy Hindu traditions, the Lord will not quietly stand aside and watch. For this reason indeed did the Indian Ocean boil over in this manner.
If Hindu's traditions are smeared, if one tries to slander sages who have renounced everything, Mother Nature cannot stand it - these tidal waves are verily a small example to show this."
So said he.

"Where is the Earthquake letter? - Sonia is jittery"
[Ed: This is not strictly related to Sankaracharya case, but intriguing nevertheless]
www.dinamalar.com/2004dec26/imp81.asp
On the last day Parliament was in session, everyone from politician to journalist is looking for a letter. This letter is causing quite a stir. It is believed that if found, it will destabilize the UPA government.
This shocking letter was written by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. As National Consulting[?] Committee President, Sonia has written the letter on the letterhead of that Committee.
The Vajpayee government had set up an enquiry commission for the Tehelka matter. One Sankara Sharma financed the Tehelka team to obtain a photo [purportedly] of BJP leader Bangaru Laxman receiving money. The enquiry revealed that Sankara Sharma was with the Congress party. This case is currently in court.
It is noteworthy that, within a few days after Sonia wrote this letter, the Tehelka Commission, presided over by retired Justice Bukkan was dissolved. [The Tehelka] matter has been handed over to the CBI. Hence, Sonia is trying to let off the hook the person who is being investigated. The BJP is asking what right Sonia has to interfere in government affairs.
BJP spokesman, Arun Jaitley has mentioned this letter, but it is not with him. He tried to get a hold of this letter. But the people who have the letter insisted that you can read the letter but we will not give it to you.
From political parties to journalists, all are casting a wide net fishing for this letter. If this letter is released in the public eye, it is expected to cause an earthquake!

"Velur prison has turned into a garden of devotion"
Velur - Because of Jayendrar Swamigal's presence, Velur prision is turning into a garden of devotion and piety.
For the 40 days, Sri Jayendrar has been in Velur prison, he has daily gone to the Pillayaar (Ganesh) temple in the prison to bow before the swami.
When the Jayendrar is taken to the jailer's room to meet his visitors, prisoners, out of their bhakthi, just want to catch a glimpse of Him. Prisoners have said that just the sight of Jayendrar Swamigal has changed their state of mind.
When Jayendrar Swami is allowed to walk about, many prisoners raise their folded hands high to offer namaskaar. Prison guards report that prisoners who have previously been violent and disruptive have, since Jayendrar Swami arrived, had a change of heart, left their violent ways and become peaceful and loving toward fellow prisoners and prison guards.
You can hear several prisoners singing songs of devotion in their cells. Some sing devotional songs from the movies.
Prison guards tell us that the usually turbulent prison has become peaceful in the last several days.
Since Jayendrar Swami's arrival, Velur prison has become a garden of devotion and piety.

The Ocean boils over...
Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh devastated by sudden massive tsunamis... Supreme Court Judge GP Mathur stranded on Vivekananda Rock.... Dinamalar reports that Jayalalitha making her rounds of devastated TN [in her Cessna?] drove to Nagipattnam, assuring people "The ocean will no longer boil over". She got into her car along with her entourage and drove off... within two minutes, tidal waves struck. People turned to run even as her vehicle sped away.
We can expect this to continue over the next few days.... Stay safe out there, people!

"If I speak out, Jayalalitha's government will topple"
Chennai, Dec. 25 - As you know, Sankaracharya has been imprisoned in Vellur jail for Sankarraman's murder. [Jayalalitha's] Government is making a Herculean effort to prevent Him from getting bail. He has not been arrested for this matter. Behind the scenes, there are many other issues. The BJP Tamil Nadu secretary Ela Ganesan has openly been saying that this secret [reason] is known only to Jayalalitha and Jayendrar Swamigal.
It is because of this [secret issue] that they are digging out 20-year old cases and blowing up this matter so that there is no possibility of His getting out of jail. In view of all this, the question is raised whether what Ela Ganesan says may be true.
There is new information about this. One of the Tamil weeklies is reporting that Jayalalitha had written two letters to Jayendrar Swamigal. When she suffered political losses, she used to write now and again to Jayendrar Swamigal, asking for help. Out of these 2 important letters, Jayendrar Swamigal sent 1 of them to Delhi and the other to Orissa. Jayendrar Swamigal did not provide the help the CM asked for in those letters. In revenge, Jayalalitha is taking this action, it is said.
Though the ruling party says they have in their hands the letter which was sent to Delhi, [Ed wonders is Sonia's Congress withholding evidence that may benefit Acharya?] they are still hunting for the other one. But it is said the letter that went to Orissa is with someone very close to Jayendrar Swamigal. An important person asked Sankaracharya why he is keeping quiet about all these evidences. He replied: "If I speak out, Jayalalitha's government will topple" reports the Tamil weekly.

Details of Appu's interrogation: Vikatan quotes police and legal insiders
www.vikatan.com/jv/2004/Dec/29122004/jv0301.asp
Appu in Custody –
Appu, who was arrested near Chittor, is now in the Forest Bungalow. Uttamaraj originally granted police custody for 3 days, now extended for 6 more days. Until 27th morning, he will remain in custody.
From 20th 5pm, when handed to police the first time, SP Premkumar and SP Vardaraju have been roasting him thoroughly. Starting 6pm, he’s allowed to meet his lawyer Purshottam for 1 hour. Otherwise he is entirely under police interrogation. We enquired with police and lawyers who are insiders. On the basis of their reports, we understand the direction of the custody interrogation was as we describe below.
Before his arrest, Appu gave interview to TV9 and said he had many crores. Interrogation started with that. “How did you get so rich?”
Appu replied: “First, I was in the quarry business. That brought some income but nothing major. Then I did real estate and that went really well. I have some buildings from which I get several lakhs rent.’
“That’s ok, what about under the table? Can you talk about that?” SP Vardaraju joked sarcastically.
The answer was only a laugh.
Both SP’s came to the matter straight away. They showed Appu the photo of him doing paada puja to Jayendrar Swami.
“Are you that close to the Mutt? And that devoted to Jayendrar?” [Ed rolls eyes – as if you have to be *close* to swamigals to do paada puja! What planet are these guys living in? I know an American who had never been to India before in his life who went last year and did paada puja to Sringeri Acharya! Good think TN police don’t know about *that* guy!! Hell, there’s a pic of Fatso JJ doing namaskar to Acharya! So, maybe she did it, right you nitwits!!]
‘It’s not anything like I’m so devoted or anything.’ Appu said there was a conflict regarding a plot in Porur that an associate of Jayendrar Swami was trying to buy. At that time, Ravi Subrmaniam asked Appu for help. Broker Valayapathi created some problems. I stepped in and settled the problem. Ravi said why don’t you come and see Swamy once? So I went. When some BJP member came down from the North, I was told they would introduce me, so I went. Swamy was there, and someone said offer flowers so I did.
“Where was it taken?”
‘Don’t you know? In a marriage hall in Madras. I’ve gone to the Mutt in all ten times. After my POTA arrest, I left off all these hit jobs and became pious. What does any newly retired person normally do? Don’t they go from temple to temple? In the same way, I went to the Mutt. I also went to Srirangam and Pondicherry.’
They asked “So you did the murder on the orders of Ravi Subramaniam?”
Appu categorically denied his involvement. “After Sankarraman’s murder, I heard Ravi Subramaniam did it, but I have NO involvement in it,” said Appu.
“How did you come to hear that? Who told you?” baited the police officers.
[Appu] said: “I came to know through my own intelligence. I asked Ravi Subramaniam. He didn’t respond properly. But I’m not that close to him to talk to him on the phone all the time. Ask my drinking buddies, they’ll tell you [RS did it.] [Ed chuckles upon coming to know of Appu’ s intelligence network!]
“Kathiravan arranged the hit team.”
‘I heard about it only thru the papers.’
“Without you, how could he have done it?”
‘Kathiravan is with me. He’s my driver, but he could have been used without my knowledge, right? Sir, if the son murders someone, will you blame the father? If younger brother murders, will you arrest the older brother?” he asked smartly?
Police nonchalantly showed him the statement Kathiravan secretly made before the court [Ed: under Section 164, which he later retracted in open court as elicited under police torture.]
Kathiravan had said that Jayendrar Swami had told Appu that Sankarraman was troubling him, so get a team together to murder Sankarraman. So Appu told Kathiravan [Kathiravan had said] to get a hit team together. Appu had given Kathiravan his gun and said “From now on, you are my commander.”
“Rubbish!” denied Appu. Prove to me right here in front of me that Kathiravan said that!” he shouted with emotion.
“From which bank did they take out the money to give the people who did the false surrender?” [Ed wonders why someone doesn’t ask PREMKUMAR that question!!]
‘When I said there is no connection between me and this matter, why do you keep asking me such things? Are you trying to somehow or the other implicate me in this case?’ Appu asked angrily.
[Police replied] “We’re not saying you distributed the money yourself, but if you’ve learned something thru your ‘intelligence’, you can tell us too.” [!]
“I don’t know anything about it” replied Appu.
“Did Ravi Subramaniam arrange the fake surrender?” [asked police].
“Ask him about that!” [shot back Appu]
In this manner, some people describing the events during Appu’s police custody told us some other things. All questions relating to Sankarraman, his responses were along the lines that he had no foreknowledge of his murder. To questions about Ravi Subramaniam and Kathiravan, he became serious and sometimes emotional, letting out angry words.
As far as the police evidence that ICICI money withdrawal and Jayendrar Swami’s talk with Kathiravan, Appu’s answers did not corroborate any of these.
Tuesday night, when the interrogation ended, it went past the Sankarraman case into another matter. Police and advocates shared information about that with us too.
[SP asked Appu] “So, we hear you have big-time political connections?”
“O, you mean Arcot Veeraswamy?” [Late DMK heavyweight] Appu himself offered. “For me, I have as much connection with AIADMK as with DMK. During DMK rule, to get tenders for my granite business, I had connection with them. They did not help me much. When AIADMK came, they put me in on POTA. After that, I traveled to Chittoor and abroad. After that, I did not have close connection to DMK” Appu said calmly.
[SNIP]
“Okay” said SP Premkumar “eat and sleep, we’ll talk more in the morning.”
Appu requested parathas. Premkumar said okay and started on Annanagar Ramesh.
Appu waved him off and said confrontationally “I don’t know anything about that. I was in London at the time of Ramesh’s suicide. If you want, you can check my passport.”
“Ok, ok” said Premkumar and Vardaraju.
These are the events as of Part I of Appu’s police custody. After custody was extended, Premkumar went to Chennai to consult [vikatan does not say with who, but you don’t have to be a genius to guess!]. In Part II, Premkumar and Vardaraju started continuously grilling Appu about his political connections – mainly about Arcot Veeraswamy and Thuraimurugan.
“What is this! You’re wandering off in all sorts of directions” Appu complained, exasperated. No longer wishing to play games, Premkumar and Vardaraju adopted tougher tactics. Appu, who was full of confidence in Part I is wearing down. Now, in Part II, he is tiring. “I am a sugar patient, I am getting dizzy” he has rambled. [Ed wonders was he drugged? Note he wasn’t allowed to meet his lawyer one evening.]
Invigorated, police officers say he is coming round to wherever they were leading him [to say].

Ravi Subramaniam in Police Custody : reliable sources
http://www.dinakaran.com/daily/2004/Dec/22/flash/flasnews2.html
"Second suspect in Sankarraman case, Ravi Subramaniam caught by police, Interrogated secretly by police in Bungalow in Utthandi"
Kanchipuram Dec. 22- Police are conducting questioning of the second important suspect in the Sankarraman murder case for the third day.
[21 people have been arrested in the Sankarraman murder case. According to police, Ravi Subramaniam arranged for the money.]
There are all sorts of news is spreading about Ravi Subramaniam. He may have escaped abraod, jumped in the Ganges river. Appu said he also got news of Ravi Subramaniam's suicide. At this stage, police have emphatically stated he did no such thing. Meanwhile, Ravi Subramaniam is in police hands and for 3 days been kept in a bungalow in Utthandi, so say credible police sources. That is why police are so certain that he did not commit suicide. Many conflicting reports are being raked up. "Last Monday night, Ravi Subramaniam came into police hands -no, no- he surrendered to police ."
In this case, Koyambed In-charge [Inspector] Srinivasan is helping Kanchipuram police, and it was to him only that Ravi Subramaniam surrendered, it is being said. After that, he was taken to Utthandi Bungalow and interrogated there, it appears. For this, senior police sources say - it is true Ravi Subramaniam is in our custody; we have been questioning him; we are even arranging to present him to the Kanchipuram courts.
[We asked] "Why the secrecy?" If Ravi Subramaniam is in [police] hands, why they are conducting this matter unofficially [against regulations] is not known. But sources confirm that for 3 days, intense interrogation appears to have been conducted of him.
Police sources let it be known that the arrest of the important suspects in the Sankarraman murder case will allow speedy progress in making out the charge sheet by coming Pongal.
[Rest of article redacted - it referred to Appu's hearing and grant for police custody.
[NB: This is the second article I've read quoting senior police sources. The Hindu said as much on Dec. 21, quoting senior police officials as confirming that Ravi Subramaniam was in police custody, having surrendered.]
[Translation note: my usual expert was unavailable while I did this one, so forgive the rough edges. I will edit and correct as soon as I can have access to that assistance.]

The Real Story behind Appu’s arrest…
…or "SP Prem Kumar lies again..."
www.vikatan.com/jv/2004/dec/26122004/jv0301.asp
Interview with Appu’s older sister: “After Raahukaalam ended, we sent him off ourselves.”
‘Appu was arrested here – Appu was arrested there’ – such exciting rumors have come to an end at last. Appu has come into police’s hands. But as to how he got there, there are two versions – and that’s a hot topic.
[Tamil Nadu] Police keep saying say that they went and surrounded him near Chittoor, in Krishnapuram, Andhra and arrested him at gunpoint.
Our investigation revealed that on the 19th (December), Appu surrendered to the police.
When Tamil Nadu police came to the farmhouse, Appu’s sister Padma was with him. On the morning of the 20th, we met with her and talked.
“My husband Chengalvaraya Reddy just left for Kanchipuram, I was about to leave before the journalists pounced on us, but you came before I could get away!” So saying, she started talking. Without waiting for our questions, she continued.
“My brother is not a demon like you all write. He has never done harm to any living thing. He is a devotee of Raghavendrar. Somebody told him that good will happen for him if he goes to Periyavaar. Believing this, he went to him. But now, only bad things are happening to him! Normally he doesn’t come often or stay any length of time. When he goes from Madras to Tirupathi, he would call me on phone. I would cook, and he would eat on the way. A few days before Jayendrar Swami’s arrest, he was here, but didn’t stay long. He left and after that didn’t come back for a long time.”
We asked: “Appu was caught here, right?”
“I’ll tell you exactly what happened. Listen! First, SP Prem Kumar and a few others came to enquire about Appu. I said he hasn’t come here for a long time. But, they wouldn’t leave us. They kept calling on the phone and coming in person. All of a sudden, we got a call from Appu. He said he is thinking of surrender, but ‘they wouldn’t even let Periyavaar get bail. On top of it they are putting all sorts of cases against him and also involving me in lots of cases. So, if I surrender at this time, I might go the way of Veerappan, I fear,” he said
Next time, the SP who talked to us said in a threatening manner: “Tell Appu to surrender at once. **The CM herself is directly overseeing this case!**”
When the SP’s past record came out in the papers, this was frightening to us. So, we decided to have Appu surrender right in front of the CM.
So I politely told the SP [of our decision]. After this, there was a change in his tone.
He said “There is no charge against Appu. We won’t do anything to him. Trust me!” he said in an easy tone.
If we keep on postponing the surrender more and more wrong information about Appu will keep coming in the papers, so we decided to arrange his surrender. Because of his affection for me, when I said this is for the good of the family, he accepted it.
We had arranged on the phone that he would come on Saturday night itself, then call to inform the police on Sunday morning. At the last minute, Appu said he would come on Sunday morning itself.
SP Prem Kumar and Srinivasan came on Sunday afternoon 12:30. First, they were talking to my husband. About 3 o’clock, Appu came in a car. They went upstairs and talked for a bit. Then they came down. Appu ate. Then, after Raahu kaalam ended, evening 6:10pm, I sent him off with the police myself.
Even then, SP said: “Your brother hasn’t done any crime. There is no way he can be punished. We won’t do anything to him,” he gave me assurance. Even then, he understood I did not fully believe him. “See, I am coming from Tirupathi. His name [pointing to the officer with him] is Srinivasan [Ed note: a name of the deity at Tirupathi]. If I say anything in front of him, it’s like saying it in front of God.” Only then did I believe him. I sent a relative with them, but after Puthur, they took a photo with him and sent him back.”
[Ed notes Premkumar in an interview on Dec. 20th claimed to have arrested Appu in Puthur, where he was wandering in the hills. -- Oddly enough, his colleague Shaktivelu, addressing Magistrate Uttamaraaj in court reverted to Balakrishnapuram in Chittoor as the place of the ‘arrest at gunpoint’.]
[Padma, Appu’s sister continues:] “Appu likes country chicken a lot. Whenever he comes to visit, I cook something with this for him. I had done it this time also, but I don’t know what he was thinking of. He had only a little yoghurt rice and got up from the table,” she said, with tears in her eyes.
[snip]
We talked to someone who was nearby and witnessed the surrender. He doesn’t want his identity revealed.
He told us: “Sunday afternoon, SP Prem Kumar, ADSP Shaktivelu, Inspector Srinivasan, in all 5 people came in a Qualis car. They came in uniform, but Appu’s people who were surrounding the place stopped them and said ‘you can’t go in uniform – this will ruin Anna [Elder brother’s] image.’ [!!!] At first, they were stunned, but they seem to have been expecting this. They changed into regular clothes. Even then, they made them wait outside the house for several hours. After a while, Appu came in a blue Maruthi. In the front room of the house, TV9 Andhra news channel cameras were present. Appu gave them an interview. “I did not have anything to do with Sankarraman’s murder,” he said with emphasis.
After that, they called in the Police officers, Appu spoke mostly to PremKumar. “What is this, sir? You know very well [I have nothing to do with it]. Why are you unnecessarily trying to involve me in a murder case?” he confronted.
“It isn’t like that. Because of information we got, we want to make enquiry. Whatever you want to say, you can say in court,’ [Premkumar] replied very calmly.
Appu said: “I eat meat, but to murder someone in a temple – I am not so cruel. Is anyone higher up trying to involve me in this?’
“Chi, chi! What are you talking about? Come off it!” [replied Prem Kumar]
They all sat down and ate. News Channel cameras were recording all this,” says this witness.
That news channel was broadcasting flash news about Appu and Tamil Nadu police all Sunday evening. If you ask Andhra media people about Tamil Nadu police surrounding and arresting Appu at gunpoint, they start laughing. “He surrendered in a planned and scheduled manner,” they say. An Andhra congress member owns TV 9. When [Appu] surrendered, all conversations were deliberately recorded with the idea that they will benefit him in the future, say Andhra media.
The day before the surrender, [Appu] called a well-known Andhra journalist and gave him an interview; [he] also asked him to record [what he said] in a cassette. Without answering questions from the journalist, he recited things he wanted to have recorded.
Appu said: “Some people have spread rumors that I don’t like Jayalalitha – that I am ‘Kalaignar (ie. Karunanidhi)’s man. In truth, I like Jayalalitha’s daring. I like ‘Kalaignar’ too, but it’s not any special connection. Now, when an actress who’s not in the market at the moment had a problem with her husband, to help her get out from her husband’s grip, word came from Kanchi to help her.” When he did that, he became close to the mutt, said Appu. Then he took it upon himself to solve another actress’ family problem...
When the journalist kept asking about Sankarraman’s murder. “I have no connection whatever with it! I was involved in such things till 5 years ago. Since then, I have left all these things!” he said in measured tones.
After the arrest, if he gets into any danger or problems, this tape could be evidence, and it also seems like a rehearsal.

Police question witness at gunpoint: "You do not know what I am capable of."
Top Story: Statement from Appu at gunpoint?
www.dinakaran.com/daily/2004/Dec/21/others/topstory0.html
Chennai, Dec 21 – **Police conduct interrogation at gunpoint, obtain statement forcibly from Appu.** Appu’s statement recorded on video.
Jayendrar [Swami] imprisoned
[Including Jayendrar [Swami], 21 people have been imprisoned in the Sankarraman case.] Police claim Appu hired the killers. With Appu and Ravi Subramaniam untraceable, it has been said, only if these two are caught can the truth fully be known. For this reason, Special Police have been hunting for Appu and Ravi Subramaniam. These special police came to Andhra, where Appu had surfaced. But they could not catch Appu.
Up to now, Appu has been keeping in touch with his family using 50 SIM cards on his cell phone. Not only that, he has been talking to the Kanchi Special Police team frequently, and confusing them. Appu never used the same SIM card twice. For this reason, Appu could not be contacted from the cell phones he had called. Appu went to this extent to stay in hiding. Once, police got news Appu was in Delhi. Immediately, special police took a special aircraft to Delhi to get Appu. But he is reported to have escaped, as though by throwing dust [Translation note: in Tamil, we say chili powder!] in police’s eyes. Thus deceived, police returned empty-handed.
Computer Picture
After that, police went back and forth between Andhra and Hyderabad in search of Appu, but they despaired they couldn’t find him. Police caught some friends of his for questioning. However they got no information.
As such, police made a surprise search of Appu’s house in Alvaarpettai (in Chennai). His sister was there. When they enquired with her, [police found out that] Appu used to come and stay in that house every week. The previous Diwali, he had visited. After that, he had not come there. The people in the house told Appu of Jayendrar’s arrest in the Sankarraman murder case. “It seems the police are looking for you in this case too!” [they said to him.] To that Appu replied: “No way!” After that, he never came home, it was said. After that, police seized a car of his [from the house]. To prevent Appu from escaping abroad, they also seized his passport.
Police made computer drawings of what Appu might look like in disguise in 20 different poses and conducted enquiries.
A few days ago, Appu came to Andhra from Goa. ‘Since Jayendrar [Swamigal] did not get bail, even in the Supreme Court, and since police are surely looking for me, if they find me, they will kill me in an encounter’, Appu believed. ‘Therefore, in order to escape death in an encounter, it is good that I surrender to the police,’ he concluded.
Given this state of affairs, Appu came out in the open the day before yesterday, and surrendered to police. Andhra police gave this news to Tamil police. Immediately, Andhra stationed police boarded Appu onto a van taking him to Kanchipuram.
Sensational Interview
Before surrendering, Appu gave an interview to a private TV station. In this interview, Appu said:
“I have nothing to do with Kanchi Sankarraman’s murder. I am a God-fearing man. As such, I went to meet Jayendrar Swami to get his blessings. I am already a multi millionaire. I already have several crores of Rupees. Why would I need [or want] to go and kill someone for a few lakhs? Even if Sankarraman had to be killed, he could have been run over by a lorry to make it look like an accident. I am not the type to think of doing such things.
I have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Sankarraman’s murder.”
This is what he said.
But now, the day before yesterday, Kanchipuram police kept Appu in Mahaballipuram and conducted interrogation throughout the night. At that time, one Police officer [Ed asks: any bets on which one?] behaved violently towards Appu, and threatening him at gunpoint, said: “Only if you say EXACTLY as we tell you to, will we let you live. If not, we will say you tried to escape and we will say we shot you in an encounter.
YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT I AM CAPABLE OF. I imprisoned Jayendrar and made a name for myself throughout India. Now, I have no worries at all. You better obediently confess to the murder, and you better give a statement about the important politician who caused Annanagar Ramesh and his family’s suicide,” he is said to have threatened.
Threatened at Gunpoint.
Afterwards, police gave a 4 page statement to Appu and told him to memorize it. Taking that statement, Appu said, “I will not say what you have written here, I will only say what I know.” Hearing this, that police officer again took out his revolver and put it in Appu’s mouth, threatening him “I will shoot you.”
Appu became frightened by this. He read over the statement police had given him several times. After that, police made a video of Appu’s statement during their interrogation, it is said. After that, police told Appu: “You had better keep smiling all the time. Don’t even think about changing your story in court. If you even think about it, calamity will happen. During police custody, you will find out what kind of people we are,” they are reported to have threatened.
Just as Jayendrar [Swami]’s arrest has created a storm, if police lodge a case regarding the cause of Ramesh’s suicide, it will create a tornado. For this reason, 2 police who investigated Ramesh’s suicide are speeding to Kanchipuram, it is reported.
The police haven’t been able to find Ravi Subramaniam yet. His location is unknown. The police has some doubt that he may have drowned. So, saying he is wanted, they will prepare a chargesheet in the Sankarraman case, it is reported.

“Sankarraman Murder Key Figure: Did Ravi Subramaniam Commit Suicide by Drowning in the Ganges? Appu’s shocking information – “My next steps will be known only after Periyavaar is released.”
Chennai Dec. 19 – Shocking news that Ravi Subramaniam a key person in the Sankarraman case jumped in the Ganges and committed suicide. It has been 38 days since Sankaracharya was arrested in the Sankarraman murder case. 20 people have so far been arrested by the police. Two main accused are still being searched for by the police. Police say Appu hired the killers and Ravi Subramaniam provided the money. Police arrested Sankaracharya on the basis of Kathiravan’s statement. But later, Kathiravan and Chinna said in court that police had tortured them to get this statement.
All this information was given to the Supreme Court by Jayendrar Swamigal’s side during the bail petition. Hence, the justices have ordered to bring all these evidences, translated into English, by January 6.
New Turn: At this stage in the case, since main accused Appu and Ravi Subramaniam are not yet caught, police offered a reward for information about them. In this state, a shocking rumor emerged that Ravi Subramaniam committed suicide by drowning himself in Haridwar and police got only a letter from him. [Ed: was it on the basis of this letter that they flew to Haridwar last week?] Now, Appu says that he also got the same news. Regarding this [i.e. Appu’s information] Nakkeeran has reported the following: [Appu says] “I have not escaped anywhere. I am right here. Ravi Subramaniam is not with me. He had already said that if [the police] harass his family, wife or [friends], he will commit suicide. Now the news I am getting is that he jumped off the brindge into the Ganges, but I am unable to confirm this.
SP Premkumar has taken an oath that he won’t kill me. Other police have also given me this assurance. I expected Periyavaar to get bail in High Court. That didn’t happen. Now, it has come for hearing in the Supreme Court. There, he will get bail. Or at least, the case will turn into a CBI enquiry and Periyavaar will be released.
Only after that will I decide the next step.”
In the meantime, Ravi Subramaniam’s parents have given another piece of information. If they deride him [Ravi S.], he has said he will commit suicide. In the past, friends say, he had on 2 previous occasions gotten sleeping pills to commit suicide. Psychiatrists say if a person has tried to commit suicide, his death will certainly have to be a suicide. Given all this, the question is raised that perhaps the news of Ravi Subramaniam’s suicide may be true.
[Editor's note– that last para is complete BOGUS, of course!! Suicidal gestures are all too common. It makes me wonder. The dailies have reported that an attorney connected with RS came to the Forest Dept Bungalow (which has been closed to reporters all week) and questions the police whether they had RS in custody. This would indicate that people close to RS have not heard from him in a while, and suspect the police nabbed him. If RS’s body is fished out from a river, an autopsy had better be conducted….
It should be noted that RS’s letter to junior vikatan (see below: “Sudden letter: in 10 days, the whole situation will change.”) was on the heels of the now infamous tour of Hyderabad, Delhi, Haridwar and Assam which Premkumar’s team took last week at taxpayer’s expense. If that was really RS, he didn’t sound a bit suicidal to me.]

A Raid Festival to entrap Raghu
“Eagle sticks his head inside the window. We started murmuring ‘Kadigashramam, Kamathuth, Rama Kurukkal’s other house…
Eagle wrinkled his brow and asked “Is this some kind of japam?”
“Your prediction came true. Police turned all the places that Raghu runs upside down last week.”
“After they encircled Jayendra Swamigal, a dust storm arose going in all four directions. That storm has settled on Raghu in the last five days. After the police interrogated him at the Forest Bungalow last Saturday, Raghu realized that, as far as he was concerned,’the pressure will start from now on’. So he keeps his lawyer close at hand at all times. As expected, the police set about attacking all the places connected to Raghu.”
…. “Tell us in detail about each one”.
“First, Kamathuth women’s hostel. The police wrung out how many women lived there, how many women had lived there in the past, full accounting of all the expenditures and income. After making a big stir, they seized documents, leaving behind a list of what they had taken as evidence.
“There was some issue at Kaamadhutam about the girl Yuvashree, remember?” [Ed. Note: I believe this was the young girl with congenital liver disease who died 20 years ago.]
“Her parents themselves came out and said they did not suspect foul play. **Even so, the police is not going to leave this matter.** They interrogated Kamathuth administrators on details about Yuvashree too.
Yaatrika Nivas, Sri Kamakoti Kadigashrama Trust is is a women students’ hostel. Raghu was managing this too. Whatever they asked at Kamathuth police asked here too.
After that they went to another house of Rama Kurukkal (Ramu Priest) in Panchikotti Street in Kancheepuram. Here, there is a row of rental houses. Amongst these, there is just one AC room that is used by Raghu. The room was locked when the police got there. Neighbors informed them that Sama has the key. [Police] sent someone to fetch Sama Kurukkal (Samu Priest), Rama Kurukkal’s son. Nothing special – no interesting evidence – was recovered here. [Police] confirmed that Raghu used to live in that room with some witnesses, and returned looking very satisfied with themselves.”
“What’s there to be so satisfied about?”
“Rama Kurukkal is head priest in Meenakshi Amman temple. They think that if they get Sama Kurukkal in their clutches, they can get something to go after Raghu with. [Ed: classic intimidation technique.]
After finishing the search, they sent word for Ramukurukkal to come to the Forest Bungalow. But Sama said: “My father is old, and he is ill. Whatever you want to ask, ask me directly,”and he came to the interrogation bungalow himself.
He[Sama] has been an assistant to Vijayendrar for 10 yrs. The police wanted to know “How did you get such a prestigious position?”
“My father is highly respected in the Matam. That is what got me this position.”
The police then started interrogating about his family members one by one: during this, Sama got very upset. [Ed: what kind of things did they ask?]
When police lodge the case against Raghu, [Ed: another intimidation tactic being employed regularly by this Special Police team. Everyone who doesn't implicate JS is in thier crosshairs!] Ramukurukkal’s family is going to play a big part.
…
With all this confusion, Raghu was not in Kanchipuram on Wednesday, he was in Chennai….
Where was he in Chennai? Who all did he see? Police say they are keeping an eye on his movements at all times. [Ed.: which is probably why they decided to have their “Raid Festival” on Wednesday! PS, According to Chennaionline, Raghu was in the hospital with appendicitis! Send that brave young man a get-well card, gentle reader!]
Eagle moved on to Sundaresa Iyer
He’s already been interrogated EIGHT TIMES. The last time police said this will be your last interrogation. But on Wednesday night, when they called him AGAIN for the NINTH time, Sundaresa Iyer became very down.
He asked the police who came to take him “You said you won’t call me anymore, why [have you come] again?”
“Well there are all these new issues we are digging up. If not you, who else can we ask?”
Each time, before interrogation, Sundaresa Iyer stands with hand folded before the Hanuman shrine at the Matam. He did so again before that 9th time. This time, it lasted two hours. Just as Premkumar interrogated Raghu, step-by-step, police asked Sudaresa Iyer the same questions. Since they are videotaping the interrogations, they want to compare the two sets of answers, it seems.
The general feeling at the mutt is that Sundaresa Iyer and Raghu have a good understanding. Even so, Raghu’s and Iyer’s answers contradict each other, it seems. This, police seem to think is a victory for them. [Ed: standard police intimidation technique – make the witness think what they said is contradicted by someone else. Try to confuse them, at least shake them up, break them down till they tell you what you want to hear.]
When Sundaresa Iyer came to the Forest Bungalow, they had summoned the Sankara College Dean Venkatesan. They had him waiting outside for a long time, and sent him away without being questioned. Maybe because it was night-time, or maybe because Sundaresa Iyer answered the questions they had of him. [!]
[snip]
This riddle is getting more complicated with all these irrelevant interrogations leading nowhere. Some police officers involved in the investigation are getting fed-up with it. One of them says: “If tomorrow this case goes to CBI, all these investigating officers will have to answer. Why are we taking on these unnecessary headaches?”
Ramukurukkal’s son-in-law Rajaraman is also trusted by Raghu. When requests from Delhi come on behalf of Jayendra, police want to know what is Rajaram’s role in these recommendations. [Ed: YEAH RIGHT! The son-in-law of a temple priest can influence this case thru the centre, but SONIA never could have!!!]
[Eagle quotes police sources as saying the POTA charge against Chaturvedi Swami is a warm-up for Jayendrar Swamigal’s case, just as Nadumaran and a few others were a warm-up for Vaiko’s POTA arrest. This is to give Jayalalitha cover, so she cannot be accused of singling people out for revenge!]
“Whatever happened to Appu?” [Ed update: Appu is reported to have surrendered to police today]
Eagle says: “Readers have come to treat this serious issue as a joke. The police interrogated lady doctor, his wife and elderly mother in a row. They offered a reward for his and Ravi Subramaniam’s capture.
The latest official I met confirmed a connection between Appu and Nagaland [!] The gun he first bought was licensed in Nagaland [!]. “
Eagle says: “I had to blink and stare – I did not know what to say.”
"And Ravi Subramaniam?"
"His family is boiling mad. Frequently police come along to grill them. "We are a respected family. If you want to take my son and interrogate him, go ahead," they rebuked police. "Our son is also a decent person. Even if you catch him, only as long as you treat him respectfully will he cooperate. If you demean him, he will commit suicide." So saying, they shocked police."

“Mister Eagle” Column

“Living in the midst of snakes”
Vellore , Dec 14:
JAYENDRAR HAS BEEN LIVING IN THE MIDST OF SNAKES.
Jayendrar, arrested in the case of murder of Sankaraman, has been jailed in the males section of Vellore Central Jail.
The C Block in which Jayendrar is lodged in a secluded place. Near this a drainage runs. The C Block was vacant for quite some months. This was cleaned in a hurry on arrival of Jayendrar.
The prison wardens report that because of the drainage surrounding the cell and because of the jungle like thorny bush around the cell this place is infested with snakes. Reports say that snakes are found even in the day time and in the night it is worst.
There are six rooms in this cell. All the other rooms except that of Jayendrar
are vacant. A cobra of 5 feet length was spotted a few days back in the room adjacent to that of Jayendrar.
This was spotted by the night wardens and they called others who killed the snake. It was buried there itself on the orders of authorities.
There are a lot of snakes around the cell and the wardens are worried that Jayendrar is staying amongst the snakes.

"I will not betray Periyavar"
Dinakaran Tamil News Daily Tuesday, December 14, 2004
www.dinakaran.com/daily/2004/Dec/14/others/topstory0.html
Chennai Dec 14.
Having failed to turn Raghu approver in the Sankarraman murder case, police officials hurriedly consulted with Chief Minister Jayalalitha regarding the status of the case.
Police have locked up Sankaracharya in the Sankarraman murder case. Up to now, police have imprisoned 20 people in this matter. The police are searching far and wide for the most important accused criminals, Appu who [is accused of] hiring the murderers and Contractor Ravi Subramaniam who [is accused of] paying them off - [Ed. Note: readers, please remember, even if the press doesn’t, these are only accusations, not proven facts] . Until these two are caught, it looks like it will be impossible for Sankaracharya to come out on bail.
Given the situation, police have conducted an intense interrogation of Raghu, the younger Sankaracharya Vijayendrar’s younger brother. For the past three days, police have conducted a grueling interrogation of Raghu lasting several hours. They grilled him about the murder. It is being said that police tried to compel Raghu to turn approver. If he turned approver and testified against Jayendrar, he would be let off completely in this case, and younger Sankaracharya Vijayendrar would also not get into trouble, it is said.
Despite [the offer], Raghu refused, disappointing police.
“I will not betray Periyavar,” he said.
Even so, senior police officials may have been bent on definitely turning Raghu approver somehow or the other. As a result, it is said Raghu was even threatened.
Given this circumstance, Chief Minister Jayalalitha conducted hurried consultations yesterday about the status of the investigation enquiries at “the Fort” [ie the State Govt. Headquarters]. Senior State Officials and Secretaries also participated in these [discussions].
It is said they also discussed what measures were to be taken to capture Appu and Ravi Subramaniam. [Ed wonders is a deal being struck??]
In the meantime, Officer Premkumar, who is heading the investigation of the Sankarraman murder, was said to be coming to meet Chief Minister Jayalalitha to tell her important news about the case. This caused a stir. But Premkumar did not show. So journalists were disappointed.
Chief Secretary of State’s trip to Delhi
Two bail applications were denied by the Madras High Court. So, the sankaramatam has decided to apply to the Supreme Court for bail. Important lawyers lodged the application. A petition to move the case to another state is also being filed.
Chief Minister Jayalalitha had discussions with the Chief Secretary regarding these two petitions in advance.
Chief Secreatary Lakshmi Pranesh left for Delhi in a hurry. Legal experts also went. They went to Delhi to discuss evidences against Sankaracharya as well as evidence the case need not be transferred with attorneys representing the State, it is said.
[snip]
Bail Petition Presented for Jayendrar
Attorney Krishnaswamy lodged the petition for bail, [asking the Chief Justice to hear the case expeditiously]. Therefore, this petition is said to come up for hearing on the 17th. He also filed a petition to transfer the case to another state. This will also come up for hearing soon.
Supreme Court Attorney Krishnaswamy said: “I’m filing a petition today. Since court holidays are coming up, I am requesting the court to hear the case expeditiously. I am also filing a petition to transfer the case to another state. Police are not conducting the investigation justly. They are exhibiting ulterior motives in their conduct. They are deliberately making false accusations against Jayendrar. Only if this case is tried in another state will the whole truth come out and that will be the right thing to do.”

What does it feel like to live in a police state? Ask the people who work for the Kanchi Math!
Translation of Excerpt from Tamil weekly vikatan - issue date 12/15/04
“Sundaresa Iyer is Troubled - Police put the screws on Sundaresa Iyer”
www.vikatan.com/jv/2004/dec/151222004/jv0202.asp
Sundaresa Iyer being the Kanchi Math’s manager, police is keeping him under constant surveillance. Starting from money matters, he handles many things [at the Math]. Even though police are trying to finger a lot of people in the Sankarraman murder case, they are putting the spotlight on Sundaresa Iyer.
With most of the accused the police pointed to in the Sankarraman murder case caught, the most important task before the police is to prove [Sri] Jayendrar’s link to the conspiracy.
To that end, they are digging away at Sundaresa Iyer Soon, they plan to arrest him, to drag him into court, and turn him approver against the Math.
In the organizational structure, Nilakanta Iyer is above Sundaresa Iyer, His title is “Srikaryam”. 84-year old Nilakanta Iyer in his first interrogation said “I don’t know anything, I’m old, my hearing is bad so I don’t get involved in anything – and Periyavaal [JS] has said let Sundaresa Iyer take care of it – so I sign the papers they put in front of me.”
After the police enquired into this and confirmed it was true, they turned to Sundaresa Iyer. From him, they want to extract – what is the value of the Math’s property; when, on which occasion and where were they bought, and how – these are their questions.
In 1 month’s time, they’ve questioned Sundaresa Iyer *EIGHT* times. Having come very trustingly the first time, with each subsequent visit, he has started getting fed up.
According to a gentleman from Kanchipuram, some people say [Ed. warning: this is second-hand hearsay] they badgered [Sundaresa Iyer] repeatedly about Indian Bank and ICICI Bank accounts of the Math. First, he hid some matters, then when they showed the evidences, he accepted it. Initially, it was the ICICI bank where police said Kanchi Math had an account. They said the money paid to the accused was from that account. But the Math replied there was no account of theirs at ICICI bank. The police asked is it in another name? They said no. After that, they said the account was a Trust. This Sundaresa Iyer could not refute. Whatever was withdrawn from that, Sundaresa Iyer has to account for. That is why they are grilling Sundaresa Iyer.
[Note: Most trusts are run by a board of trustees. It’s highly improbable that either Jayendra Swamigal or Sundaresa Iyer could *directly* control trust funds!]
Other than this, the police have questioned Gopi, Ramachandran, Sankar, Vinod, who are employees of the Math, said the gentleman [from Kanchipuram]. After the biodata questions, *all other questions were asked angrily* by the police. They have answered to their knowledge, and this has been recorded.
THEY WERE RECORDING ONLY THE REPLIES, NOT THE QUESTIONS.
Sundaresa Iyer objected strongly to this, saying only with the questions are recorded will the answers have context. [Ed. Note: Ah, but you don’t need context in a witch-hunt!] But it was of no use.
He was angered by another thing – Many people are carted off by the police for questioning. They are taken in a car that belongs to Sankara College. Once they return, the police obtain their signature on a paper that says they were brought back safely. They get whoever is nearby to witness the signature. Sundaresa Iyer objected to this, saying when you [ie police] don’t mention anything about taking people out of the Math, what is the justification for take a signature for returning?
This has upset the police. With all this, the police are especially angry at Sundaresa Iyer. When we enquire on police side, they say: “Sundaresa Iyer gives proper responses to many questions but sometimes he talks back. Now he understands that we are clamping down on the Math, so the next round, he’ll cooperate with us, we feel. **Soon we will arrest him, put him in courts and turn him as approver,” police say with a wink.**

Fears about Periyavaal's Health - Dinamalar 12/6/04
It is worrisome to me that Jayendrar Swamigal has not been brought out to public view from Vellore prison since December 4, 2004. The last person to see him was his lawyer, Krishnamani last Thursday, December 10, 2004. His attorney a Mr. Thiagarajan was not allowed to see him on Friday, December 11, 2004. Let us pray to Amman for his health.

Meet Ravi Subramaniam - a Must Read!!
Vikatan Article dated 12-12-2004
http://www.vikatan.com/jv/2004/dec/12122004/jv0201.asp
Sudden Letter: “In 10 days, the situation will change.”
Tuesday, December 7… Around 10:30 am, a man about 35 years of age came to our office and handed an envelope to the office receptionist, immediately turned around and vanished.
When we read the letter, our reaction was surprise, shock and confusion. This letter was appeared to be written by contractor Ravi Subramaniam, for whom the police is searching in connection with the murder of Sankarraman.
Was it really Ravi Subramaniam? From where did he send it? We don’t have any answers for these questions. We are publishing this letter as it is in full for our readers without having confirmed the veracity of what Ravi Subramanian has said on his behalf:
“Respected Junior Vikatan Editor:
My name is Ravi Subramaniam. You must have known about me quite well. The police are searching for me in a case with which I have no connection. I was minding my contract business but police have made false accusations against me and are hunting me.
I have lots of things to say. But if I say them to the police, it may not have any impact. I want to clear up for you all the false accusations the police are spreading in the press about me. I respectfully request you to take this to the people.
The contract business had been in my family for generations. Only after I became successful did I start on the path of bhakthi. I went to several maths all over India – I respected the social service being performed by the maths. In the same way out of admiration for their social service, I became a devotee of the Kanchi Math too.
Even though Jayendra Swamigal was in an exalted peetham and a sanyasi, the way he used to mingle freely with ordinary people without aloofness, the way he would express opinions, freely without any hesitation – all this increased my admiration for him. I considered him a human devata. I started attending his functions. Throughout the world, Jayendra Swamigal has thousands of devotees like me. But nowadays, if you follow a madaadipathi of your choice, the police consider it a crime.
I saw stories in the newspapers claiming that I introduced women to the Kanchi Math. This is too horrible for even God to bear!
God does not distinguish between male devotees and female devotees. For god, there can only be devotees.
Whenever I started any new business project, I would bring the plan to the Math for blessing before I started work on it. Only in this way, have I taken some of my friends to the Math. In connection with my trade, there have also been some businesswomen whom I know professionally.
In all this, I have never met Jayendra Swamigal alone to get the blessing. I stood in line with the rest of the public to get his blessing. This is how Jayendra Swamigal likes it.
Other than that – the stories police are shamelessly spreading in the press about my having taken actresses to the Math and left them there – are all a monstrous lie. I am not that type of person. The Math also won’t condone such acts. If anybody does such things out of over-eagerness, the Math will scold them. The present accounts linking actresses to the math are a police conspiracy.
Police make it sound as if I introduced Appu to Jayendra Swamigal. Appu is an aasthika. He got there himself. Their description of him as a dada can only be accepted to a certain extent. A North Chennai Congress Party member who is close to Appu told me that all the big-shots in society use him for their selfish ends and afterwards land him in trouble. I know details about Appu only through this person. I have seen him a few times in the Mutt also.
I want to say something else. Some police officers and some senior AIADMK have also come to the Math with Appu and the people in the Math know this too.
I want to relate some details about other ways Appu got involved with the Math. Recently, Appu has helped a number of temples: Melmaruvathur Aadi Parashakthi temple, Samayapuram Maariamman Temple, a Pondy Ashram, an Amman temple next to Madurai -- like this, there are many temples where he has given donation. In the same way, I think he might have helped charities related to the Sankaramatam also. Police are trying to show as though anybody who likes the Math is a criminal. The same way, Chief Minister Jayalalitha has also given so much help to the Math. What would they say about her?
Truth be told, in this case, the police are being duplicitous. I wonder whether even the investigating officers know why they are conducting this enquiry with such ferocity.
As for Auditor Radhakrishnan and Thirukotiyur Madhavan, these two are not good people. Many do not know the other face of these two. They do vengeful acts. They have no respect for religion.
Now that he is putting on a goody-goody act, will the police look into whether [Auditor Radhakrishnan] has 5-6 crores? If they enquire into how he amassed so much wealth, many facts will come out. He thinks the crooked things he has done, for which he used to use the Math’s name in high places, will not come out. We can bring out everything.
While at the Math, Radhakrishnan played with finances in a big way. When they came to Swamigal’s attention, after he had confirmed through various means that Radhakrishnan was guilty, he gave him a big scolding and, rightfully, for his own welfare, told him: ‘Don’t do crimes against God’.
Even after that, Radhakrishnan used the Math’s name to do more crookedness, and this, some people know full well. Only after this was he dismissed from the Math and told not to come near there. At that time, he went to see Periyaswami [ie JS] and Chinnaswami [VS] and he vowed : ‘I’m going to see to it that you pay for this.’ – this, many people know.
As long as he was in the Math, many people who were harmed by him did not touch him. After he left the Math, his enemies have taken him aside and threatened him from time to time.
All these are to a point open knowledge. It appears there is no connection between the Math and Radhakrishnan’s assault.
As for Thirukottiyur Madhavan, he is an enemy of Hindus. As the puppet of a number of wealthy people, he was blindly opposing Jayendra Swamigal. In temple matters, Madhavan had conflicts with others about how things should be done there. If someone came to ask for an auspicious time for some good undertaking, he would also interfere and give a conflicting opinion. Like this, in business also, he had enmities. For that, someone might have beaten him up.
But now, all the blame is being heaped on the Math. Whatever accusations they throw, the Math has the strength to bear it. With the blessings of the ancestors and of past good deeds, nobody can do any harm to the Math.
If Jayendra Swamigal did not have truth on his side, why would Kathiravan change his testimony? He himself has said in open court that his first statement was because of police torture.
Only now have I seen Kathiravan, Chinna and the rest of the accused in the papers. Police are giving me a leading role in the drama they are enacting to entangle Jayendra Swamigal in a big way. Let me specifically and emphatically tell you this much: They are just concocting the case.
You have to take another thing to the people. Some months ago, Jayendra Swami and people close to certain politicians had a difference of opinion regarding the appointment of an auditor for the Math. You can enquire into whether this is true or not. These few people were insisting that someone close to AIADMK should be appointed to oversee Math accounts. But the Math declined this as unnecessary. This is one thing I know of that may be the reason for anger against Jayendra Swami.
Besides this, there are important politicians who have been compelled to take action against Jayendra Swami for political reasons.
Also, the politicians putting Jayendra Swami in this suffocating position are insulting their own Hindu-dharm. The leaders of other religions condemn Jayendra Swamigal’s arrest, but these leaders are derogatorily crowing over it. This can only be said to be a treason against Hindu religion.
Another thing, I saw in the papers that police are saying I am going about Delhi disguised as a Sardar. I have to laugh. I am not in any disguise. I am only myself. Police are spreading rumors about me, my family and my personal life. The people who are close to me know what I am like and how my family is. I even saw in the press that my family is angry that I am associated with the Math. If someone goes to the temple, will their family ask “Why are you going there?” Even if you tell a lie, it should make some sense!
Finally, it is my wish to surrender myself. But I feel in my heart that my life will be in danger at the hands of the police. I am getting word from some AIADMK higher-ups that they will shoot me and, like always, make up a story that I was trying to escape and finish the case very easily. That is why, mourning my destiny, I am in hiding.
I can definitely say that in another 10 days, the whole situation will change. There is going to be an important turn in Sankarraman’s case. I think it’s enough if I come out then. If the police had conducted their case openly without bias, I wouldn’t have gone into hiding even now. Whatever I know I would have told them. Whatever I am telling you now, I would have unhesitatingly told the police.
But they are proceeding with a master plan which goes beyond even this murder case. They are spreading news that I am in their custody in a way that even my family would believe it – there is some cunning behind this.
Editor Sir, I have told you what is on my mind. As to the truth of this, God is the witness.
Respectful Greetings,
Ravi Subramaniam.

Police lure Appu- AIADMK designs on Mutt funds -12/8/04

Here is summary/translation of article in latest juniorvikatan. Only the initial segments relevant to the case were translated.Note: In this gossip column, the news is related by a 'Mister Eagle', often with a nudge and a wink, and a generous dash of sarcasm, mostly cites unnamed police sources, so read with caution
"Mister Eagle is in the house. From welcoming the Governor to arresting [Sri] Jayendrar, the [Tamil Nadu] government Cessna plane has been very booked.Even now, to bring Appu who is in hiding to Hyderabad, a small army of special police has gone in this plane only. Keep one of your journalists on alert in the airport at all times! Information for finding Appu looks to have come from the Q-branch's SP Sivanandi. I will give you those details later....
[snip]
The Tamil Nadu government (Ed. note: code word for JJ) has installed Alexander as DGP for [Special Investigations (?)] and Sivanandi as SP for Q-branch. DMK is calling them "one-agenda officers", saying they have been promised promotions if they finish off certain jobs for the government....Sivanandi was keeping track of Appu when he was in Annanagar Dept. He is well-connected with Appu. "Don't worry about [being killed in an] encounter. Come back." [Sivanandi] has indicated, and Appu has sent back positive signals [to this message]. [Appu] has said that if he returns, he will tell about not only the Sankarraman case, but also the suicide case of 'Annanagar Ramesh'.** On this basis, Prem Kumar flew to Hyderabad. Rumor has it that Ravi Subramaniam is also surrounded in Delhi.
(**Ed. note: Annanagar Ramesh was found dead in a case connected with the jailed 'Saravanabhavan' Annachi - who owns Saravanabhavan restaurant. Annachi was formerly devotee at the Mutt, who used to donate rice for their poor-feeding. He became estranged from Jayendrar Swamigal after Periyava would not intervene when some woman (his wife?) ran away from him. This information is from elsewhere in junior vikatan - sorry can't remember exactly where)
Continuation of editorial note: Annanagar Ramesh's death was immediately ruled a suicide, but there were police quarters who suspected Appu's involvement. There are also several other cases pending before Appu. Despite this, Appu applied before the High Court AND WAS GIVEN permission to fly abroad for 'health reasons', with an instruction to check in with the Indian embassy abroad!! This permission was only revoked (if memory serves me) last week (!) after some conscientious constable raised objection to it!!!!
Part II
RAGHU’S REACH: PRIEST RAMU
Kanchi investigation is spreading underground roots. In Sankarraman’s style, a mysterious person is writing anonymous letters to the police with a lot of tips. They target Alvaapetei Auditor.
The details of the letter [Ed. Note: apparently thought to be from someone familiar with goings-on at the Matam] accuses politicians as well as Chennai Auditor Alvaaipettai and his cronies. [This man] has been an auditor for prominent politicians as well as religious leaders. The letter charges that [certain interests, through Auditor Alvaaipettai’s faction] want to install a certain Thiaagarajan (aka Prasunananda) as matt aadipathi and thus gain control of the Mat’s finances.
One Sangh Parivaar person is also in this crowd.
[snip]
Police don’t know what to make of this. They say they are waiting for the next letter. (!) Since the letter says Sangh also has a connection in this, they are keeping their eye on an auditor well known to the press. [Translator’s note: ie a newsworthy auditor]
[snip]
All this aside, there is another shocking news from the Kanchi Mat: Prasunananda has disappeared, putting police on alert. With all the goings-on, he was calmly doing his pujas. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, he took off, saying “Mahaaperiyaval [ie current Sankaracharya’s predecessor] came to me in a dream and told me: don’t stay here any longer, it isn’t good for you. How could I ignore Him?” [Ed. Note: rolleyes!!!]
Last Wednesday, around 10:30 pm, the police summoned 37 people from the Mutt for questioning. From the highest administrator to the sweeper, all were dragged before the police and subjected to questioning. At the Mat, everyone is perturbed and harassed. Maybe it is because of this that Prasunananda decided to make himself scarce?

"Dismantled: Police Kannan"
http://www.vikatan.com/jv/2004/dec/08122004/jv0302.asp
For Kanchi Sri Jayendrar's case to be made without any hitch, a central person is 'Police Kannan'. Police point to Kannan, who according to police sources, knows all the secrets of the Mutt in detail.
Having named Sri Jayendrar the prime accused and jailed 18 people in the case, police are in pursuit of contractor Ravi Subramanian and Appu. After Sankarraman's widow and her children, Kannan is their next most important witness.
Over the course of 15 years, Kannan worked at the Mutt, most recently in security. There is rumored to be nervous speculation about what all testimony he has given to police concerning the murder.
After hearing this from people in the know, we began making enquiries about this Kannan. When we started talking to people close to the Mutt, we came to understand how involved he was in the Mutt affairs.
Kannan was appointed for Sri Jayendrar's security by the Tamil Nadu government. In his younger days, he worked at the Mutt in the kitchen as a servant. He aspired to become a police officer. His elder brother, Govindarajan was a police officer, so he also got a job with the police.
Through Sri Jayendrar's recommendation, he came to work in the Mutt for his security. After that, he gained the trust of both Sri Jayendrar and Sri Vijayendrar. Jayendrar Swamigal lovingly called him "Iyengar son". His job was to provide security for JS, but he did all the tasks a PA might. From office work to sending off parcels, Kannan was an 'all-in-all'.
There were five people who always accompanied Sri Jayendrar. As such, they had some sphere of influence in the Mutt: Neivedi Krishnamurthy, Babu, Raghu (not the brother of Sri Vijayendrar, Driver Sitaramaiyya (who used to work at TVS). The fifth being Kannan. Kannan was so important, he was present everywhere, even able to go into JS's bedroom.
Emboldened by all this respect, he also fell into doing some bad works. Using the names of big officers, he got money from people, saying he will get them jobs through his influence.
It is rumored that when this reached Sri Jayendrar, he overlooked it because of his affection for Kannan. According to sources said to be connected with the Mutt, this is why the police questioned him at first. However, he did not give them any useful information, saying he did not know about it.
After this, he was suspended from his job [by the Govt./police] and he was handed over to Cuddalore SP Premkumar.
When he [Premkumar] started using many different interrogation methods, Kannan, under duress, spilled the beans.
Sources say that Kannan too had conflicts with Sankarraman. In his threatening letters, Sankarraman repeatedly mention one important issue that concerned Kannan.
One of the Mutt's pujari's daughters ran away with someone of a different caste without telling her family. The father asked for the Mutt's help to save his daughter. Kannan took up this responsibility. Kannan got together a search party and found her in Trichy. Jayendrar Swamigal and Vijayendrar Swamigal were in Kumbakonam at the time. Kannan accompanied the couple there. VS suggested that the girl could be housed at the [Mutt's] hostel for women, and said to make things right with the boy's family, if they asked for money, to negotiate. The next week, they both ran away again. Kannan sought out police to help find them.
After some timethe family arranged her marriage to someone else. This girl wrote to Sankarraman saying 'I, a foresaken woman am living like Panchalli' Sankarraman gossiped about this with everyone.
One week before his murder, Sankarraman met with this girl's brother and asked him how he tolerated such things. The brother fetched Kannan, and there was a scene. Sources also mention other things in Sankarraman's letter. In Police Kannan's statements, these matters are documented.
In regards to the murder case, sources say that it is Kannan's testimony that links Ravi Subramanian and Appu to [Sri] Jayendrar.
We went to meet Kannan at his Kancheepuram home. Upon hearing our identity, Kannan's eyes reddened. "All these problems have been caused by you journalists. On top of it you're coming to me for explanations?" So saying, he shut his door.
Kannan, who has been suspended, gave a statement before the magistrate at Utharamelu. Even though he is for the time-being a witness, police involved in the Kanchi Mutt investigation say it wouldn't surprise them if there are charges brought against him too. (Editorial note: perhaps he didn't give them everything they wanted...)

For Kanchi Sri Jayendrar's case to be made without any hitch, a central person is 'Police Kannan'. Police point to Kannan, who according to police sources, knows all the secrets of the Mutt in detail.

Srirangam Usha Destroys Police Story
Summary translation from vikatan article Issue date: 12/8/04
“Srirangam Usha Destroys Police Story” www.vikatan.com/jv/2004/dec/08122004/jv0301.asp
During the bail application hearing in Chennai High Court it was said that Sri Jayendrar did many things that were against a sannyasi’s dharm. It was said he was in the habit of talking to women at all odd hours, including on the night of the murder. Prosecutor Tulsi said a woman from Srirangam, Usha and he talked on the phone on that day for a long time, and also that this woman had absconded with a lot of money.
This evidence did not hold up for even 24 hours. Usha herself came the very next day to the police station, along with her lawyer, Sudha Ramalingam and was immediately questioned at length by the police.
“I have had cancer since I was 20. At 35 years of age, in 1994, I was married. My husband took me to the Mutt because I was emotionally troubled. I was even thinking of committing suicide, and Jayendrar Swamigal’s words gave me much solace.
After wards, my marriage fell apart. I was left with my aged mother to care for. I approached the Mutt for help, and Jayendrar said yes to helping me.
Everyday, I like to start the day by getting his blessings, for which reason I called him on the telephone.
This past October, the police came to question me and *they came again on November 13th* in Srirangam. I told them all this then itself. I cannot understand why after all this, they have said such things in open court. Since they said I was absconding, I decided to come here myself.
Her brother said Usha had many serious health problems, including cancer, bowel disease and thyroid problems. “At one point, doctors thought she had blood cancer. By the grace of God, we found this was not the case. With all this, I don’t understand why the police is after her like this.”
We spoke with Sudha Ramalingam, a Human/Civil Rights attorney, who accompanied Usha. Sudha said: “Last month, the police came and questioned not only Usha, but conducted inquiries about her with all her neighbors in Srirangam. These police actions made it difficult (uncomfortable) for Usha to stay there, so she left for Chennai.
She informed the police that she was leaving and gave them her address in Chennai.
Despite this, the Prosecution deliberately claimed she was absconding.
The police accusation is why was Usha getting such large sums of money over a long period of time [from the Mutt]
This cancer patient asked for help from the Mutt. Just as they help so many other people, they helped her also. This money was sent through bank transfers. She has provided her passbook to the police with all the details. She received 2000-3000 Rupees per month. A few times, she received upto 5000 Rs. While this much is true, the charge that Usha received lakhs is FALSE.
How is any of this connected with murder? When she talks to Sri Jayendrar, she gets mental peace. For this reason, she talks to him. How can there be anything wrong with that?” Sudha Ramalingam demanded to know.
Police now say Usha, who fully cooperated, had no connection with the murder. “However, she talked to him on the phone on the day of the murder, and therefore may have evidence she could give us. That is why we called her in (editorial note: wha-aa?? They claimed she was absconding!!) for questioning,” say police sources, now. “In Sankarraman’s letters to JS, Usha is mentioned. Even if it is only a guru-devotee relationship, we questioned her out of necessity only.
We also questioned Alapakkam resident Muralidhar Swamy, who gave shelter to Usha. He used to visit Usha when he came to Srirangam.”
After all this, to top it all, our police sources mentioned another shocking revelation.
In addition to Srirangam Usha, they are planning to question five other women, who were supposedly also mentioned in Sankarraman’s letters: Vanaja, Vijaya, Saroja, Mythili and Thambaram Jayalaxmi. (Ed. Note: and Eena. Meena, Anju and Manju too, I bet!)
Vijaya – of Kumbakonam. Frequents the mutt. Her husband is a retired bank officer. She now manages the Kamakshi Amman Wedding Hall.
Vanaja – of Bangalore. A devotee. Every year, on Jayendrar Swamigal’s birthday, she does sandal abhishekam at Kamakshiamman temple.
Saroja – of Bangalore. Hails from a well-to-do family. Comes often to the Mutt. JS stays in their house when he travels to Bangalore.
Mythili – She is close to two industrialists in Madras. Comes to the Mutt often.
Thambara Jayalaxmi – Nicknamed “Baby” – During important functions at the Mutt, she is always present.
Police sources say these women will be questioned for the purpose of gathering evidence against Sri Jayendrar.
*
We were told that even before marriage, Usha had association with the Mutt. She used to manage a Charity Hall (Chatram) belonging to the Mutt at Kaalahasthi. She was married in Andhra Pradesh to a man called Narayanan, for which she sought blessings at the Mutt. She also worked in the real estate/construction business at Suman Housing Material limited. A 34 lakh loan was procured in this matter. The Bank complained to the police that false documents were given to get the loan. Her husband Narayanan alone was imprisoned and then let out on bail. Andhra police say, since Usha has surfaced in the Kanchi case, they will now go after her as well in this matter.
Usha says “Before marriage, I was told Narayanan was a lawyer. I found out afterwards that this was not true. But still, I made effort and continued with my marriage and family life…. When his business failed, my husband and I started to have more and more quarrels. After a while, we divorced and I came to Madras. It is not true that I gave any false documents to the bank.”

Article on Appu - vikatan - 12/01/04
Summary Translation of Article vikatan December 1st issue http://www.vikatan.com/jv/2004/dec/01122004/jv0302.asp
"Resourceful Appu - A Criminal History"
A mountain of accusations are waiting for Appu, who is being sought in connection with the Sankarraman murder case. Police sources say, "If we are allowed to question Appu without interference, he can never escape us."
Appu is no ordinary dada, but a politically-well-connected 'powerful dada'. That is why, despite all the cases piled up against him, Appu has escaped police attention.
Now, in the Sankarraman case, higher-ups from upstairs have given the green signal to police to hunt down Appu. We enquired with police regarding this resourceful dada.
Even though his life of crime began many years ago, from the very beginning, Appu never got entangled in any [criminal investigations]. He made his money by selling rosewood. Even in this venture, his name never surfaced.
When he was noted to have connections to a National Party leader's 'anna' (elder brother), his name began to come up. He was hiring goons to beat up people in Chennai, but still, [Appu's] name stayed under the radar.
The last time DMK came into power, Appu's name came to the limelight . In a couple of dealings, he used Arcot Veeraswamy's name openly, which meant nobody could touch him, say police sources.
Next, when AIADMK came to power, he built a freindship with a VIP's sister's son. [Editor's note: Hmmm,.... who could that be?] Using that sister's son's name, saying 'he (ie his friend the unnamed VIP's sister's son) sent me', he began to get a lot of things done. When [police] brought this up with the 'top brass', it elicited no reaction. So, Appu could roam about quite relaxedly.
In the meantime, he was caught once, say police sources, which they related in detail:"Jeevajyothi's husband, Santakumar was murdered. In connection with this, police commisioner Mutthukarupan was vehemently pursuing 'Annachi' Rajagopalan. There was even a rumor that Annachi had sought refuge in the Sankaramatam.
But Police Commisioner Mutthukarupan got word that it was Appu who was looking to protect Annachi.Already, Appu had interfered with Mutthukarupan's enquiry of Annanagar Ramesh. He had been questioning Annanagar Ramesh about some shady dealings connected with MK Stalin. At that time, Appu threatened that if he [Ramesh] talked about any such things, he [Appu] would wipe out him with his entire family. Following upon this, Ramesh committed suicide along with his family.Mutthukarupan used the Annachi incident as an opportunity to cultivate Appu. [Ed note: very, very fishy] "
In December, 2001, Appu was imprisoned. After this, they began to dig up old cases that had been pending against him. Dusting these off, they booked him under POTA. BUT [get a load of this] HE GOT BAIL and got out of prison. [Ed.: Notice that Appu was able to acheive what MDMK leader VAIKO couldn't! Speaks volumes about Appu's ties to AIADMK.]
Having extricated himself so easily from all these old cases PLUS the POTA case, Appu could not realize that the Sankarraman case was going to become such an unending headache for him.
Although he did not realize at first the severity of the Sankarraman case, he caught wind that the police were seriously pursuing him. So, he decided to escape out of the country.
The petition he submitted to the Madras High Court last June conveniently came up for hearing on November 4, 2004. The petition claimed:"In 1000lights district, there was a case pending against me, so the DSP confisicated my passport. My health is poor. I have heart trouble. So, I want to get treatment in the US. Therefore, I request permission to use my passport". On that petition, the Public Prosecutor argued "There are so many pending criminal cases [against the petitioner]. Therefore, he should not be given permission to travel."
Despite this, Judge Rajapandian gave Appu permission to travel aboard, saying: "Appu can stay in America for 3 months. He must inform the embassy of his whereabout and address and present himself to the embassy once a week."
Now, police are keeping an eye out [for Appu], thinking the Sankarraman murder, for which they arrested Jayendrar Swamigal on November 11th, will draw Appu out into the open. This decision will be mentioned in the investigation file.
In consideration of this, the police approached the High Court to withdraw the permission to travel. Even though the police got Appu's travel permit canceled, , police sources are concerned he could have left for America on Nov 4 itself. His full name is 'Kangini Gopalagrishnan' - police have enquired at Chennai and Delhi Airports [Ed note: Just Chennai and Delhi? Apparently *this guy* could never take a flight from Hyderabad or Pune to Nepal!!!]
Appu may or may not have been able to leave the country, but only when he's caught will the suspense surrounding the Sankarraman murder be fully resolved.
